The protocol does not ask you to accept, like, resignify or love your tinnitus.

When engaging in the exercises outlined in the protocol, it is essential to approach them with a specific mindset. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to feel an overwhelming sense of positivity, nor do you have to accept or love your tinnitus. It is unnecessary to force yourself to give tinnitus a new meaning. Instead, it is best to approach these exercises with an open mind, devoid of preconceived notions or emotional investment.

Treat the material in the protocol as if you were reading a simple grocery list—mechanically and without attaching any sentiment to it. The goal is to detach yourself from any emotional response and pragmatically approach the exercises.

Similarly, maintain the same mechanical approach when conducting exposure to stimuli exercises. Read the sentences and engage in the focusing practices as much as you can bear, but at a minimum, aim for three repetitions per day for each set of exercises.

By adopting this approach, you pave the way for habituation to reaction. By repeatedly exposing yourself to the exercises without emotional investment, you gradually diminish the strong reactions triggered by tinnitus. This process enables you to develop a sense of familiarity and indifference towards the condition, reducing its ability to evoke distress.

Moreover, this practice sets the stage for habituation to perception. As you continue to engage in the exercises consistently, your brain learns to filter out the intrusive nature of tinnitus, treating it as background noise rather than a threatening stimulus.

Over time, your perception of tinnitus becomes less pronounced, allowing you to navigate daily life with greater ease and reduced interference from the condition.

Remember, the key is to approach the exercises mechanically without overwhelming emotional investment. Consistency is vital, so strive to engage in the activities thrice daily for each set. By adhering to this practice, you can gradually achieve habituation to reaction and, ultimately, habituation to perception, leading to improved well-being and a diminished impact of tinnitus on your life.
